Exploring Mare Island

Ongoing Series: good things are happening on Mare Island

I often meet Vallejo residents who have never been on Mare Island, in spite of the fact that they’ve had unrestricted access for over 10 years. Even more people have driven through this area, but have not gotten out to see the most interesting parts of the Island.    They haven’t seen Mare Island golf course, the historic buildings, the cemetery or the uninhabited areas (at least by people).   I wonder why they’ve never been there, even though it’s a wonderful part of the city.    Perhaps nobody invited them to come visit!

The local paper seems to be reporting more about events and news on Mare Island, (now that the Master Developer seems to have put their major economic challenges behind them).  This article talks about volunteers who are helping get visitors access to some new areas on Mare Island.    http://www.timesheraldonline.com/ci_14862814?source=rss

It’s easy to overlook the wonderful and historical sites in one’s back yard and yet, be willing to drive hours to see something amazing.   Why is that so?
