Ship work returns to Mare Island

Ongoing series:  Good things are happening on Mare Island

“This could just be the project that gives hope to the community again . . . a catalyst for a community that is struggling.”

Ship-building and maintenance has been the primary purpose of the Mare Island Navy Base for almost as long as California has been a State, a part of the USA.   The Navy historically selected the most premium of sites, to establish bases.   They developed the infrastructure, to make it a very useful manufacturing site, to create almost everything needed to build ships.  To abandon this infrastructure, to treat is as a museum site, seems wrong.   While the history of the area is wonderful, the continued and respectful re-use of these sites seems to be the best way to continue the legacy of the area.

I recently posted a story about the rail service returning to the Island, and how it will help bring life and promise to the area.   Now, if the Napa River Stright is dredged, and the dry docs opened, another major and historical industry comes back to life.

This is the promise of the Mare Island Navy base, returned to us, to become the one of the most vital and exciting places to be in the San Francisco Bay Area, and beyond.    It’s this promise, of a wonderful future, that keeps this community motivated to see it through, and make it a reality.
